Our Approach
The Rethinking Recycling Academy, a Delterra initiative, partners with villages in Indonesia to transform their Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), known locally as TPS3Rs, by working hand-in-hand with government officials, waste collectors, local implementation partners and multinational industry players. The Academy provides digital capability building programs coupled with up-front capital support and on-the-ground implementation support. We do this by leveraging our design principles and delivering support in four focus areas.

Orchestration
We bring together all the necessary stakeholders - from government officials to waste collectors, local partners to multinational industry players - in frequent round table discussions to collectively solve the communities’ waste problems
We help communities meet the legal and governmental requirements and engage financial partners to successfully transform their community-owned waste management facilities.
Operations optimisation
We optimise operations at material recovery facilities (MRFs), known locally as TPS3Rs, by providing on-the-ground support such as optimisation of collection routes and training of workers and managers on financial management and on sorting and composting procedures.
We support communities with the purchase of equipment, ensuring fair and ethical working conditions for all workers, and ensuring facilities are economically sustainable.
Community Behavior Change
We help develop community-led behavior change programs that educate and encourage community members to recycle
We support communities with the necessary tools, such as separation bins and educational flyers, and launch innovative platforms (e.g., chat bot) to facilitate long-term and scalable behavior change.
Data-driven methodology
We rigorously measure and track our progress and impact in all of our community programs, setting clear goals for social, environmental, and economic metrics
We use the collected data to continuously improve our programs, constantly refine our approach and assumptions that underlie our delivery models.
